The win puts Chicago (48-23-1-6) just one point away from securing first place in the West Division with two games remaining in the regular season. The club currently holds a four-point lead on the second-place Texas Stars, and will face either Milwaukee or the Rockford IceHogs in the West Division Semifinal, which begins at the Allstate Arena on Wed., April 14.
“We’re trying to get a little momentum and a little consistency to our game right now,” said Wolves Head Coach Don Lever. “Our effort was better tonight. We competed harder.”
Milwaukee (40-29-2-7) took the lead, 1-0, at 7:32 of the first period. Center Mark Van Guilder won a face-off in the Wolves zone and chipped the puck out to right wing Ryan Thang, who fired it past Chicago goaltender Peter Mannino.
Mannino (25-4-1) posted 35 saves on 36 shots in the win.
Defenseman Paul Postma knotted the score, 1-1, when he bagged a power-play goal with one second remaining in the first period. The Wolves won the faceoff and the puck squirted out to Postma at the blue line, where the defenseman wound up and cranked a shot that clanked up under the crossbar past Admirals netminder Chet Pickard.
Left wing Andrew Kozek gave the Wolves a 2-1 lead at 14:19 of the second period when he was streaking down the slot at the perfect time to catch the rebound from an Anthony Stewart shot on his stick and bang it back past Pickard.
Pickard (14-15-3) turned aside 34 shots for Milwaukee.
The Wolves and Admirals will meet for a rematch – the final contest in the Amtrak Rivalry series - at the Bradley Center on Friday at 7 p.m.
